Plastic Pollution

The ocean is inundated with plastic waste—over 5.25 trillion pieces, weighing approximately 269,000 tons, float on the surface alone. This pollution poses severe threats to marine life, entangling creatures and entering the food chain.Despite global efforts, a recent UN-led treaty aimed at reducing plastic pollution collapsed due to disagreements over production caps and recycling strategies. This highlights the urgent need for unified international action and individual responsibility.

Crown of Thorns Starfish (COTS) Outbreaks

The Crown of Thorns Starfish, a natural predator of coral, becomes a significant threat when its population surges.Outbreaks have led to extensive coral loss on the Great Barrier Reef, with some areas experiencing up to 90% coral mortality. These outbreaks are exacerbated by nutrient pollution and declining water quality.Efforts to control COTS populations are crucial to preserving coral health and reef biodiversity.

Coral Bleaching

Coral reefs, often referred to as the "rainforests of the sea," support about 25% of marine life despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor. However, over 80% of the world's coral reefs have been affected by bleaching events since 2023, with some regions experiencing mortality rates exceeding 90%.These events are driven by rising ocean temperatures, intensified by climate change. The 2023–2025 global bleaching event is the most extensive on record, impacting reefs across at least 82 countries.Without immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, these vital ecosystems face irreversible damage.

Industrial Fishing & Mining

Industrial fishing practices, including overfishing and destructive methods like bottom trawling, deplete fish populations and damage ocean habitats. In Australia, the fishing industry generated approximately $400 million in gross value of production in 2023–24.While this supports the economy, it underscores the importance of sustainable practices to ensure long-term marine health.Additionally, industrial mining activities contribute to habitat destruction and pollution, further stressing marine ecosystems.

Founder & Director

Owen Goodyear – With roots in biology and fieldwork from South African savannas to Spanish dehesa, Scottish woodlands, and Australian reefs and rainforests, Owen has studied animal behaviour, led biosecurity projects, surveyed reef health, and restored bushland. Passionate about diving and sustainability, he brings global conservation experience to shaping Salty Wombat’s accessible, high-quality gear.

Founder & Director

From building hospitals in Senegal and designing schools in Kenya as an architect, to protecting the world’s oldest rainforest as a biosecurity field officer, my path has always been about protecting what matters. For the last three years, I’ve lived and worked on the Great Barrier Reef as a diver, photographer, and researcher. I started Salty Wombat Co. to bring together my love for design, conservation, and storytelling — and to inspire others to protect our fragile blue planet.
